A final 73…

As I write this, I feel there are so many memories in a life cut short by a set of unexpected circumstances. Though a friend for a short time, you had the opportunity to set me straight several times. We knew each other for just a few years before your medical problems started that split us up by several miles… We became a couple of like minded folks connected by phone, or wattage and wires. If I had an issue, you were a text away. Likewise the other way around. It’s because of you, I learned to operate a radio and think more critically about problems in my own life. More than that, I opened up and for the first time in years allowed a stranger to become a close friend, a listening ear, and sometimes a leaning post. We had a couple of interesting adventures and found ourselves more like long lost brothers than just a couple fools meeting my happenstance on this crazy journey through life. More than just a radio call, I feel our paths were crossed for a reason, and I’m just now understanding what that reason is. You passed the torch, it’s time for me to carry it for a while and find someone to call me their Elmer, and most importantly their friend. Thanks for the good times had, the bad times you helped me through, and the stories of our times in the field and on the road that I’ll always remember.

73 for now, we’ll see you again one great day. KD8OFL from KD8IZD, clear one final time… May your example of dedication to the hobby be one we can all follow. One of kindness, patience, acceptance, the willingness to try something so off the wall that people call you a fool, but then call you a genius when it actually works, but most importantly, may they call you a friend. May your legacy live on through close friends like Aaron and I.

Farewell old friend. KD8OFL, Dave Gower, Silent Key. 8/8/2021
